Melanchole is an experimental Blackletter typeface inspired by Gothic script, liquid metal, latex, and lava lamps. It combines the dramatic strokes and elaborate swirls that Blackletter is known for with the legibility and style of a modern Display typeface.

For this project we were tasked with creating an original app along with branding and promo. The final design delivers a clean, sleek identity with vibrant pops of colour. Many journaling apps are chaotic and cluttered, so my goal was to provide the user with both a simple interface and stylish aesthetic.

This project was made in collaboration with Marcelle Lussier as a part of our mentorship program. Open Structure is the first exhibition in a series hosted by the Visiting Curator Program at the University of Manitoba. The final design is heavily inspired by 70’s post-modern graphic design and most importantly the exhibition’s main theme: breaking beyond boundaries in anarchical way. A custom typeface was built using a grid, the base of which could be used and modified for other exhibitions.
